What is the PSAT?

The PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Assessment) is a 2 1/2 hour "practice" test given in October to Juniors (and available for Freshmen and Sophomores) that measures the same skills as the "official" college-entrance SAT.

The test includes Critical Reading, Mathematical Reasoning, and Writing skills (multiple-choice "grammar" questions), but it does not feature an essay (as does the SAT).

This test is unique insofar as the test booklets are returned to each student along with his/her score, which enables each individual to review the test and identify where errors were made.

Because of this special feature, this test ideally accommodates our PSAT-review workshops, conducted in December and January (after the tests and score-results are returned), during which we analyze the test and introduce key strategies that oftentimes enlighten students to new ways to score higher when applied to the "real" test, the SAT.

The PSAT also contains a questionnaire that provides colleges with personal information that may pique their interest and encourage them to send pertinent information to prospective future collegians.

All in all, the PSAT is a test that serves so many purposes that it should not be overlooked. All Juniors (and even all Sophomores) should sign up with their counselors in August to take advantage of this once-a-year opportunity!
